There is a side to 'preppers' that is about local systems (or at least can be) less about how to hoard bags of rice and more about how to make sure there is clean water in the streams, fruit on the trees and warmth in the home (that does not depend on oil etc).

Survivalism cannot create a sustainable culture, but becoming more independant of the unsustainable culture in which we live has some rays of hope.
