You are much, much older than you think

Your family is quite a lot bigger too

One factor in our current social and environmental crisis is an alienation, a distancing from other forms of life on our planet.

Such distance is understandable enough if the only animals you see are on screens or plates, if the tree closest to you has four legs and a flat surface, or has been sliced finely into paper.

I’d like to offer a remedy for that. One which requires a little imagination and a little education. I can honestly say this has transformed my understanding of life, and my part in it.

It starts with an admission.

I’m a little bit in love with the theory of evolution.

True, it’s a dry, pragmatic a scientific tool, though it does have immense predictive power.

But it's more than that. It is an elegant explanation which holds together the network of wonders we find when we look at the biological world.

What evolution reveals is vast, and weird and amazing. A simple set of rules which explodes from single cells, blue whales, fungi that control the minds of ants, ventriloquist birds and more than I will ever see.

It’s so big that I choose to look at through tiny keyholes, and these keyholes reveal an enchanted world.
