You are touching on bigger subject, not just mortality but aging in our society and also weakening of ties in community.

If my dog was not just my dog, but a family dog, or a community dog then my passing would leave her in good hands. As I age perhaps it would be younger people who would keep animals in my life.

I may not be in that position in a couple of decades, but it is something I can plan towards.
